Institute Inquiry Experience:
DNA Fingerprinting and Gene Cloning
Student Week (7/11)
We spent our inquiry experience in the Hematology/Oncology research lab with Dr. Laura Gibson. Our goals for the week were to:
- Become comfortable with using new lab equipment that we were not familiar with
- Identify ways that DNA can be expanded
- Understand the different ways we can look at a DNA fingerprint and how that information can be useful
- Identify how bacteria can be useful to us in the lab
- Have fun!
Our time in the lab was divided into different modules:
- introduction to the lab and the people that you will work with
- transfection (inserting plasmid DNA into bacterial DNA)
- Cloning plasmid DNA
- Isolation and analysis of plasmid DNA
- DNA fingerprinting
- Experimental Design and Graphing
We also were able to take various fieldtrips within the HSC while we waited for different parts of our experiments to be completed.
