Summer Inquiry

Predisposition to Cardiovascular Disease

Glenn Rightman and Joan McCabe

HSTA teachers hard at work!!

Objectives!!!

Glenn and I had the privelege to work with Dr. Laura Gibson and Jim Fortney her senior research assistant.
HSTA picked a gem when they found this team to work with our teachers and students!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BEGINNINGS;

We were given a brief introduction to the lab...people and equipment.

GENERAL DISCUSSION;
What observations might alert us to a disease that has a genetic component?
What is the basis of genetic disease?
What would you want to know to determine if a disease "runs in the family"?
What changes in DNA might occur that create a problem?
How is it possible to look at someone's DNA to evluate changes?
Is the size of the DNA that is amplified what we would predict from "healthy" DNA?

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS;
Glenn and I found working in Dr. Gibson's lab VERY informative, exciting, and interesting.
She was so knowledgeable and organized..ready for us to go to work.
She was prepared, right on the target with what our students would need.
Jim, the assistant was such an excellent teacher!!
Glen and I are very excited for our students to work in the lab with these instructors!!
