Title: No Butts About It

Learner Outcomes: The unit will reinforce the dangers of smoking, and the student will use Microsoft Excel and calculators to find out just how much smokers spend daily, weekly,monthly, years, etc.
Duration of Lesson: Approximately one week
Materials: Smoking survey of school population, calculators, computer lab, Excel, printers
Technology Tools/Courseware: Computers, Excel, Microsoft Publisher and/or Creative Writer, calculators, printer
Teacher Notes:
- Students should be reminded of the confidentiality of the survey forms!
Procedures:
- Day One - The health/math classes will survey the student population of the school regarding smoking habits. This will be completed with the survey form through English classes.
- Day Two/Three - The MI Math Classes will compile the preliminary results of the survey. Given the results of the survey, the students will calculate the percentage of students from each class who are smokers, the percentage of smokers in the total school population, the average number of cigarettes smoked per day by the student population, the average cost per day per student smoker, the percentage of student smokers whose parents also smoked.
- Day Four/Five- The students will compile the percentages and general information from the students' surveys for use by the Health Classes and this Math Class to compose a pamphlet about smoking.
- Day Five/Six - Given the computer lab, printer, Microsoft Publisher and/or Creative Writer the students will create a four or six sided pamphlet detailing the dangers of smoking.
- Day Seven - The student will assume he/she was a one-pack-a-day smoker and "Kicked the Habit" for one year. Given the price of a pack of cigarettes, the students will calculate the money saved by not smoking for one year. Given a shopping expense page, the students will visit web sites and compile a list of purchases they could make with the money saved.
Modifications: None
Enrichment Activities: After viewing the pamphlets created by classmates, the students will choose one pamphlet from each class. After being copied, the students will fold the pamphlets, which will be delivered to area schools and public agencies.
