Preparing to begin the Module

Below is a list of things you'll need to do ahead of time to make this module run smoothly.

1. Call the American Heart Association and schedule a guest speaker. In WV the # is 304-965-7998. They will direct you to a person who can visit and also bring information that the students can do for a community awareness and fund raising project for the AHA.

2. Call your local hospital and schedule a tour. Specifically ask for demonstrations of the EKG, ECG, and stress tests. Request an EKG from a healthy heart and one from a diseased heart that the students can look at and compare the differences.

3. Be sure to make travel arrangements to the site and get permission forms out and returned.

4. Go to the HSTA web site to become familiar with the "ask the expert" section so students have a resource to turn to when doing research. http://nt-hsta.hsc.wvu.edu/health

5. Make sure that you have enough hearts for dissection and bypass. This should be l heart for every two students. Often you can obtain these from a local slaughterhouse for nothing, or a local farmer calls me when he butchers. These hearts can be bagged and frozen until the day before dissecting. 24 hours before dissecting, wash the hearts thoroughly to remove as much blood as possible and then soak them in a bucket of 1/2 water and 1/2 isopropyl alcohol so as to cover them.

6. Schedule the computer lab for a day so students can work on Inspiration software and complete their assignments.

7. Make sure that they have access to computers and a library for research purposes.

8. If your school has a digital camera, then arrange to use it on the day of the heart bypass and if possible on the day of the field trip.
