Cultural Bag
This activity requires 45 minutes to an hour
Purpose:
Students will gain an awareness of visible and invisible aspects of who they
are and their culture.
This is a good lead-in to defining multicultural education.
Materials: brown grocery bags, couple magazines per student, glue stix, scissors
Instructions:
Students are asked to find photos and text in magazines that readily identify
themselves and represent their culture. These are placed on the outside of the
bag. They are also asked to find photos and text in magazines that identify
aspects about themselves that are not easily noticed or not readily known about
them and their culture. These are placed inside the bag. Each student then introduces
him/herself by referring to those things on the inside and outside of the bag.
Tell students they can volunteer to share their bags.
