Grade Level: 9

Subject: Science 9 Coordinated and Thematic Science

  • Synopsis/Abstract: Students will assist is the generation of a c-map based on their preexisting knowledge concerning concepts related to atomic structure or other topics using the Rapid Fire Mode of Inspiration software.

Main Objective: To assess preexisting knowledge of concepts and related topics.

  •  WV IGO's (general): Additional content specific IGO's are not included here.
  • 9.5 (WV - Science:Grade Nine Science:Scientific Attitudes/Habits of Mind) model and exhibit

the skills attitudes and/or values of scientific inquiry (e.g. curiosity logic objectivity openness

skepticism appreciation diligence integrity fairness creativity)

    9.9 (WV - Science:Grade Nine Science:Scientific Processes/Thinking Skills) organize qualitative

and quantitative data into tables diagrams and/or graphs for analysis

    9.17 (WV - Science:Grade Nine Science:Laboratory Investigations/Hands-on Learning) engage

in active inquiries investigations and hands-on activities for a minimum of 50 percent of the

instructional time to develop conceptual understanding and laboratory skills

    9.20 (WV - Science:Grade Nine Science:Laboratory Investigations/Hands-on Learning) use

computers and other electronic technologies (e.g. computer CBL probe interfaces laser discs

to collect analyze and/or report data interact with simulations and research

*9.102 (WV - Science:Grade Nine Science:Computer/Technology) collect analyze and display

data using computers and other electronic technology

*9.105 (WV - Science:Grade Nine Science:Computer/Technology) identify and solve problems

    with the appropriate technology

  • Materials: Computer

    Inspiration Software

  • Projector or Converter to Display Computer Image

NOTE: If a projector or converter is not available, have a student duplicate what you generate on the computer screen on the board. Print and copy your Inspiration c-map for distribution.

  • See the "Severe Weather" Inspiration file (view only)

Download the "Severe Weather" Inspiration file

    Procedure:

    • Enter Main Topic.
    • Ask students to brainstorm and contribute additional related concepts to the c-map based on their preexisting knowledge.
    • Add the related concepts via Rapid Fire.
    • Guide students through the organzation of the c-map by asking them where to add the concepts.
    • If desired, add linking words to c-map.

  • Extension: Return to c-map at the end of the lesson and upgrade the c-map with newly acquired knowledge to celebrate their successful completion of the lesson and/or review. Or, have students add to the c-map using Inspiration for assessment using the Rubric for a Concept Map or Flow Chart created by Sue Alkire and found in Assessment Tools of the Reinventing Education West Virginia website: http://reinvent.k12.wv.us
