Database Search Procedures

There are a number of ways to search the WVU on-line databases. The following two sets of procedures are examples that work well for this course.

1. Go to the WVU libraries homepage.

2. In the right hand portion of the screen under "Find articles," select "Databases."

3. From the list that follows, click on "Academic Search Elite."

4. In the window that pops up, enter your login information and submit.

5. Enter the terms* you are searching for in the database search field and hit search.

Alternative to steps 2-5.

2. Under "Popular Databases" in the center of the screen, click on "EbscoHost."

3. In the window that pops up, enter your login information and submit.

4. Choose "EbscoHost" again from the next screen

5. From the next screen, check as many databases as you want to search and click "continue."

Note: " Academic Search Elite" likely will already be checked. This is a large and multidisciplinary database, so you may just want to search here. Alternatively, you may also want to check "ERIC" (excellent education database) and/or other databases depending on your interest area, such as MedLine or Health Source for health..

6. Enter the terms* you are searching for in the database search field and hit search.

*Note: For some readings/assignments, specific search terms will be given to you. For other assignments the search terms will depend upon the topic you are researching. Be aware that refining search terms can take some practice if you are not familiar with the system. However, once you become acquainted with the database search tool you will find it to be an invaluable resource.
