Pre-Workshop Readings Reflective Paper and Presentation (due at Fall Workshop)

Complete the 3 On-Line Preworkshop Readings and examine/read 1 to 2 of the On-line Resources and Databases listed on the Syllabus. Write a 2 page "reaction and reflection" paper that addresses all 4 articles/resources. Include the following: (a) Highlights of what you learned or was especially of interest to you; (b) How the readings have relevance to your own community; (c) Your perspective about actions that might be taken based on the articles; and (d) How the content might be used with high school students.

At the Fall workshop, I will ask you to present a 2-3 minute summary of your reflection paper. In doing so, have a question that you can pose to your colleagues to engage them in conversation. I also will ask you to share highlights of your HSTA club activities to date.

HSTA Club Agenda and Reflection Papers (3) for months of Sept, Oct, and Nov (due via email end of Sept, Oct, Nov).

You should have 4 hours or more of meetings each month. For each meeting, produce a 1 1/2 to 2 page paper (double-spaced) that contains the following:

  1. the agenda for the meeting,
  2. a summary of the activities/discussion completed during the meeting,
  3. your reflections on the impact you believe the meeting had on the HSTA students (e.g., what was learned, attitudes) and
  4. your reflections on ways to improve upon any limitations of the meetings as weel as ways to follow-up what you did in the meeting.

Initiating Posts (7) for Threaded Discussions in VISTA Discussion Folders (due Tuesday of each week that we have threaded discussions, beginning week of Oct 3-7; see Class Session Outline)

The instructions for initiating these threaded discussions are found in a separate "Threaded Discussions" document. Please study these instructions and examine the threaded discussions rubric that is linked to within this document.

On-Line Resources and Databases Reflective Paper (due via email December November 28)

The Syllabus contains a section entitled "On-line Resources and Databases," which provides links to many electronic resources. Peruse/investigate at least 5 of these resources--including the CDC-HSTA Resource Web Page--and write a 3 page paper that sets forth your reaction and reflection for each resource. For each resource, include the following: (a) Brief description of the resource; (b) highlights of what you learned by perusing the resource; (c) strengths and any suggestions for improving the resource; (d) your ideas for how the resource could be used to help you with HSTA students or your regular classroom teaching.

Lesson Plan, Implementation, and Reflection that Applies Course Content (due via email and posted to VISTA Dec 12)

For one to two HSTA club meeting(s), develop a lesson plan for a science/math enrichment activity(s) that applies content from this course and provide the activity(s) to your HSTA club students. (Providing the activity is part of "conducting HSTA club meetings" listed undere "in-class" activities on the Class Session Outline). If you do this for two club meetings, you can have one lesson plan that spans both meetings, but please state this at the beginning of the lesson plan. The activity(s) needs to pull in some aspect/content from the text "Public Health Applications for Science Instruction" but also can include the use of the food composition text, pedometers, METS compendium, on-line readings/resources from the syllabus, and "walkable communties" resources. Please read the "End Notes" information about "Educational Activities" on the course syllabus before developing and providing the activity(s).

Your lesson plan needs to contain the following components: Title; Key References (provide URLs if Internet); Objectives; Brief Description of Content/Skills Addressed; Advance Preparation and Materials Needed; Safety Precautions as Applicable; Procedures according to the following:

Outine the procedures clearly and in sufficient detail so that another teacher could "run with it." Consider providing an "example" or two if you have math applications etc. If the procedures placed in your lesson plan include any information taken directly from another source, place that information in quotations and cite that source (give the full reference). If any of your procedures are adapted from another source, state "Adapted from (give citation)" in your lesson plan. If you link to an Internet site as a part of your procedures, state the name of that site in your procedures.

Please single space within each of the above components, and double space between them.

Add/write a one page reflection (double-spaced) reflection at the end of the lesson plan that includes the following: (a) How was the lesson related to course content? (b) how did the lesson go (strengths, limitations, perceived learning that occured)? (c) how could you change or follow-up the lesson to make it more meaningful?

It is expected that your lesson plan and reflection will be at least 4 pages in length.

When you are finished with the lesson plan and reflection, type a brief message and attach the lesson plan and reflection to a posting that you place in the VISTA discussion folder "HSTA Lesson Plans". The purpose of this is to share it with your colleagues.
