Get on Your Feet

Boone County is in the top 10% of the State of West Virginia in cases of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and physical inactivity.  Due to these alarming statistics, the Scott  High School HSTA (Health Sciences & Technology Academy) Club located in Boone County, West Virginia, has created an interactive, fun program entitled “Get on Your Feet.”

The Club is determined to do just that – get residents of Madison and Danville, West Virginia “on their feet.”  Participants will be involved in a number of activities such as basketball, volleyball and tennis tournaments as well as walking competitions and games from the past featuring “Games Grandma Used to Play.”  The club will develop and/or further develop an indoor and outdoor walking trail.

The club will also incorporate two, informational/mini-health fair sessions and two educational programs: educational program topics may include diabetes awareness, effects of tobacco, healthy eating habits (recipes for healthy meals, etc). A student focus group will also be initiated to further expand, develop and strengthen the overall project.

The HSTA Club will select a target group of approximately 20-30 participants who will be monitored throughout the project.  All members of the target group will be between the ages of 16-60 and in the over weight range of BMI.

Through this challenging and rewarding program the Boone County HSTA club is confident that members of the target group will experience lower target heart rate, lower blood pressure, lower incidences of obesity/BMI, display positive attitudes about physical activity and increase their overall level of physical activity due to participation in the “Get on Your Feet” program.  Furthermore, the students will work to continually increase the amount of physical activity in the local community and raise awareness about obesity and overall health.
