Get Moving, Get Healthy with HSTA

In response to findings in studies by the CDC linking lack of exercise to a variety of diseases and the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to reduce obesity and a sedentary lifestyle in Americans, the Preston County Mountain HSTA Club will sponsor the “Get Moving, Get Healthy with HSTA” program.  This program involves engaging participants in increasing their levels of physical activity.  The goal of each individual is to complete and document a total of 2,250 minutes of activity throughout the four-month program.

Students will organize support groups for the activities.  Each group will consist of at least five people and must include at least one Preston High School student and one adult.  Each individual will keep a record of the number of minutes he/she was involved in moderate to vigorous activity above and beyond that of a normal day.  (Normal activities such as walking to class and sports practices cannot be included in the tally of minutes.)  This number will be reported to the group leader who in turn will report to the program recorder on a weekly basis.

Support presentations on nutrition and exercise by certified individuals will be made available to all participants. A walking trail with calorie expenditures will be marked both inside and outside at Preston High School.

Groups that complete the goal will have their names put in a drawing for prizes.  The three groups with the highest number of minutes recorded will receive pedometers to encourage them to continue exercising.
