Health Careers

  • Field Trips: The exploration of health careers is an important component of the HSTA vision. Teachers and FSC organize student field trips to hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other health related settings. Possible field trip experiences could include local hospitals or clinics, blood and dental laboratories, X-ray facilities, nursing homes, an optometrist office, rehabilitation centers, pharmaceutical labs, physical and inhalation therapy facilities, children's hospital wards, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, Math/Science Field Day at Carowinds, NC or Kings Island, Ohio.

  • Speakers: Health professionals are invited to speak (by FSC and/or teacher), and often bring specialized equipment and demonstration materials. Through the Rural Health Education Partnership (RHEP) program, WVU students who are interning at rural clinics can be invited to present programs that emphasize what is involved in their specialty, as well as tips for preparing for college. RHEP personnel are well aware of the HSTA program and anticipate HSTA field sites contacting them to become involved in HSTA programming. WVU health professions and HSTA faculty serve as a resource for career information in the following areas: Nursing, Dentistry, Physicians, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, HSTA faculty.
