Science-Technology-Society (STS) Action Plan

Once students have posed a problem that involves their communities health, and attempted to solve that problem through completion of their community science project, their reflections may naturally drift to some of the issues (or opposing viewpoints) inherent in the problem at hand. Through an STS action plan students have an opportunity to examine opposing viewpoints and devise a plan of action, which can lead to a more satisfactory resolution.

The main goal of an STS Action Plan is for students to develop an ability to apply their knowledge and skills to create viable solutions towards improving their local communities. Students should always be encouraged to devise their own strategies for solutions.

Penn State University offers a well-thought out lesson of STS activities and organizes actions into 4 categories: Educating the public, influencing the public on consumption, placing pressure on political or governmental agencies, and improving current environmental conditions.
