Project Documents

In order to increase the duration and learning value of HSTA projects, each student is required to submit to their HSTA teacher two documents (APPENDIX A): Problem and Procedures (due Nov 15); Abstract (due March 15). Students who do not submit these two documents (with the required components) by the due dates will not be allowed to present their project at the HSTA Symposium, and accordingly, will not successfully complete the community component of HSTA for that year.

The teacher should provide and review each of these two documents, along with examples of completed documents, in September. The documents also should be made available to students in electronic format. The field site coordinator will arrange to pick up the forms from the teacher on or soon after the due dates. The student should always retain a copy of each document they submit for their HSTA portfolio. The student should make sure the abstract is clear, uses proper grammar, and has no misspelled words: Abstracts that conform to such will appear in the HSTA Symposium Proceedings (Internet and hard copy).

Document, Due Dates, Components (APPENDIX A)

DOCUMENT 1: PROBLEM AND PROCEDURES (due November15)

  • Why address this problem (and how is it related to health and communities)?
  • What are your research questions (research projects) OR desired outcomes (community service)?
  • Summarize the procedures you will follow to do the project.
  • What references have you used for your problem and procedures?

DOCUMENT 2: ABSTRACT (due March 15)

  • The abstract must be typed and 100 to 200 words in length.
  • The abstract must summarize: problem, procedures, research question (research) or desired outcomes (community service), findings (research) or accomplishments (community service), and conclusions.

Science Project Documents and Samples

If a HSTA Teacher wishes to deviate from the content of either of the above documents, that teacher must make that request in writing to the HSTA Curriculum Coordinator and receive approval from the Curriculum Coordinator by October 15. Any deviation must still result in students submitting two documents by the due dates provided above.

Students are required to complete documents 1 and 2 in order to present at a HSTA symposium.
