Activity 5: Colors in a Flame

Purpose:

Students can then view the visible light emitted from atoms of various elements in a gas discharge tube through a spectroscope. Spectroscopy is the study of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by atoms.

Materials:

diffraction grating, utility knife and/or scissors, shoe box, pencil, tape, index cards, rubber bands

Time Frame:

50 minutes
