Procedures: Committing to Action

The Question:

How affective was the action taken?

Background Information.

In this lesson, students come to understand the implications of a contract. Students will be informed from the outset that verification of completed actions will be required. All students may not believe that human impact upon the environment is a serious problem. Those students should be permitted to select another STS issue. Opportunities to share actions should be provided. These can be determined jointly by you and your students given your space, time, and scheduling restraints along with individual preferences (for example, wall displays, school assemblies, oral class presentations, videotapes, newspaper articles, school newspaper, photographs).

Depending upon the actions selected, this lesson offers limitless opportunities to coordinate actions with all subject areas.

Before beginning this activity.

Make copies of Citizenship Action Contract and Verification Sheets.

Procedure.

Follow the Instructional Procedures for the Actions Lesson 6, in the Global Atmospheric Change curriculum

http://www.ed.psu.edu/ci/Papers/STS/gac-5/a6.htm

Assessment 1.

Feasibility rating of ACTIONS - PROS AND CONS

Assessment 2.

Have students reflect through writing how the group process of discussing the feasibility of each action changed their thinking about the feasibility of taking any of the actions. An example question to pose to students could be as follows: "As a result of the group discussion, how did your mind change about the feasibility of any of the actions? Which actions and what influenced you to change your mind?"
