TOBACCO ADVERTISING TECHNIQUES


 


HEALTH APPEAL
    The ad suggests that the tobacco product can do wonders for health or that healthy people use tobacco.

COMPARISON
    The ad compares their "superior" brand to another "inferior" brand.

AMAZING NEW PRODUCT
    The ad states or implies that their brand or packaging of tobacco is new and, therefore, better.

SEX APPEAL
    The ad uses attractive, sexy men and women to sell tobacco and suggests that you'll be attractive and sexy if you use it, too.

SYMBOLS
    The ad promotes the tobacco brand's logo, catchy saying or special image so people will recognize the product and buy it.

BANDWAGON
    The ad claims "everybody" is using their tobacco product and makes you feel left out if you don't use it, too.

HAVING FUN/BEING POPULAR
    The ad shows people having fun with friends and implies that using their brand will help people enjoy themselves more and be more popular.

MOCKERY OR PUT-DOWN
    The ad is designed to make people feel they are doing something wrong or have failed in some way if they don't use the brand being advertised.

SNOB APPEAL
    The ad claims rich and famous people use their brand of tobacco or says that even thought their brand costs more, it's worth it.

TESTIMONIAL
    The ad shows a famous person using a certain brand or talking about how wonderful the tobacco product is.
