Biomed at WVU

The Biomedical curriculum for the 2006 HSTA Summer Institute is comprised of multiple experiences:

Anatomy & Physiology of Heart & Lungs: Students were introduced to the anatomy of the heart and lungs and began working with real specimens. Instructor: Dr. Penny Klinkhachorn

DNA Fingerprinting and Cloning: Students became comfortable with usng new lab equipment that was not familiar to them; identified ways that DNA can be expanded; came to an understanding of how they can look at a DNA fingerprint; identified how bacertia can be useful in the lab; though of a question and designed an experiment that he/she would do if this lab was his/hers. Instructor: Dr. Laura Gibson

Clinical Chemistry: Studentslearned about the structure and function of proteins through their use in diagnosis of diseases in the clinical laboratory. They used techniques similar to those used in most clinical labs to explore how creatine kinase is used to diagnose heart attacks and how cholesterol levels n blood are measured. They also measured the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) in samples. Dr. Andrew Shiemke

Protein Purification and Activity: Students became familiar with some of the equipment and procedures used to purify proteins; came to understand how the activity of a protein may be measured and quantified; used a computer program to analyze and graph scientific data; and learned how muscle cells acquire th energy to do work. Instructor: Dr. Stephen Graber

Cardiovascular Physiology- The goals of this inquiry were to examine how lifestyle affects health and wellness; expose students to experiential learning; and introduce students to collaboration by sharing their knowledge at the end of the summer program. Students used the Iworx software and exercise bike to monitor the effect of stressful environmental situations on the heart: Instructor: Ms. Priscah Mujuru

Human Performance- Students were introduced to the five basic components fo fitness and the five levels of fitness. They learned about the benefits of Dance Dance Revolution in fitness, how to do a stress test, and used the Bod Pod to determine body composition. Instructors: Dan Bonner & Dave Donley
