Lung Function
Gas Exchange
- The exchange of gases between the lungs and the blood takes
place across the alveolar and capillary membranes. As a group,
all the layers of tissue through which the respiratory gases
diffuse are known as the alveolar-capillary
Acid-Based Balance System
- The acid-based balance system is a system that keeps the pH
in the blood as balanced as possible at all times. When there
are too many hydrogen ions, the buffers absorb them to make the
balance.
Infection Control
- Germs and infection easily access the lungs; these germs
are collected in the tubes of the lungs. They are eventually
brought up in the mucus by cilia or destroyed by white blood
cells where they are coughed up and out of the body.
