Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles. For more information and details search on the American Diabetes Association web site.

Prevalence of Diabetes: In the United States 7% of the population has diabetes. In West Virginia, more than 10% of the population has diabetes.

Prevent Diabetes: Research studies show that eating right and being active can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes among those at risk. Click on Your Disease Risk to find out more about the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and what you can do.

The CARDIAC project conducts clinical trials with youth and the community on bmi, blood pressure, and blood lipids (test for diabetes) to assess the unacceptably high prevalence of heart disease and diabetes in West Virginia.

Healthy Hearts is an interactive web site for youth to learn about cardiovascular health! You can find out about how to eat right and become physical active.
