2005 HSTA Summer Institute Inquiry Experience:
Anatomy and Pathology of Heart & Lungs

 

Audience: HSTA Teachers and Students

 

Faculty: Dr. Penny Klinkhachorn & Alan Klinkhachorn

 

 

Monday (10:00-End of the day)

Morning

Introduction
A prepared Power Point presentation will be shown to the class, stating the goals of the class.

Creative thinking workshop
The students will be given seemingly unrelated props (sponges, paper bags, broccoli) and asked to work together in groups and use their creative thinking abilities to come up with analogies between their props and the heart or lungs.

 

Lunch

Inquiry Experience – Lungs

The class will be introduced to the anatomy of the lung and will begin working with real specimens.


Movie (time permitting, otherwise on Wednesday)

Osmosis Jones will be shown to the class. The students will be asked to point out familiar terms used in the movie, as well as answer a quiz

 

 

Tuesday (8:30-11:45 & 1:15-4:30)

Morning:


Inquiry Experience – Hearts

The class will be introduced to the anatomy of the heart and will begin working with real specimens.

Afternoon:

Cadaver Lab (All day for all students)

Several stations will be set up, displaying various organs or parts of the body.

Web Authoring

Wednesday

All day:

Computer Lab


The students will utilize the internet and work on their presentations. Virtual dissection programs will also be used.


Jeopardy


The students will be divided into teams and work together to answer heart and lung trivia questions in a game show-like format.

Thursday

All day:
